The Prophet, peace be upon him, said “You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love each other. Shall I not tell you about something, if you do it, you will love each other? Spread the greeting of peace amongst you (the Islamic greeting of ‘assalaam ‘aleikum’)’’ (narrated by Muslim 81). This hadith urges Muslims to exchange the Islamic greeting of peace among each other, to greet known as well as unknown people. Greeting with peace is a sign of harmony and friendship. When Muslims do it, they become more amicable and cordial. This phrase is unique to them and distinguishes them among followers of other religions and doctrines. It also implies modesty, tolerance, and respect for others. (Annawawi’s explanation of Sahih Muslim 36/2).
