Instinctive evidence of the Truth of Allah‟s Existence

Written by : A.J. Kassem

Human beings sense the existence of God by pure instinct, with or without Prophetic revelation to guide them. Expressions of sensus divinitatis have existed since beginning of time in all cultures and religions all over the world. We are informed in the Quran that Allah made a primordial covenant with every person before the world was created that they would recognize their Creator. Consequently, all people are inclined to seek out, communicate with, and be in the good graces of the higher power they can sense, as has been done in some form or another throughout history. Some scientists argue today that belief in God or higher power is wired in our genes.1 Allah says in the Quran:

And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins – their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], "Am I not your Lord?" They said, "Yes, we have testified." [This] - lest you should say on the day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were of this unaware." (7:172)

In Islam, the case of the existence of God is solid in terms of its rational foundations as well as the purpose, meaning, comfort, and guidance it gives to our lives. The Quran inspires conviction by appealing to the aspects of the inner life of human beings- to the heart and the mind. Intuition and experience work in tandem with logic and reason to arrive at a state of certainty in faith.

Although Allah is invisible in this realm of existence, He has left innumerable evidences of His Reality through which people can know, be inspired and empowered by Him; if they only look and consider.

Allah states in the Quran:

{وَلَئِنْ سَأَلْتَهُمْ مَنْ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ لَيَقُولُنَّ اللَّهُ قُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ (25)} [لقمان: 25]

And if you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth?" they would surely say, "Allah" Say, "[All] praise is [due] to Allah"; but most of them do not know. (43:25)

In other words, if you were to ask anyone of sound mind to tell you what is the origin of all that exists, the inevitable answer would be Allah, God, or at least, “something”. As for those who claim to be atheists, while they may deny the validity of organized religion, they cannot argue against the fact that everything that exists came from somewhere, as, according to the known laws of the universe, it is impossible for something to come from nothing2 and it is also impossible for something to create itself, because that thing did not exist before itself to create itself. For those who offer that the universe is cyclical in nature in alternating between big bangs and big crunches3, all that they have done is to mention processes, without actually dealing with the question of where did it all start from? So, we say to anyone who claims, on the basis of science, that God does not exist – what is your explanation for the existence of this wonderful universe of matter, energy, stars, galaxies, and people?

{ أَمْ خُلِقُوا مِنْ غَيْرِ شَيْءٍ أَمْ هُمُ الْخَالِقُونَ (35)} [الطور: 35]

Were they created by nothing, or were they the creators; Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are not certain. (52:35-36)

2- the First Law of Thermodynamics states that neither matter nor energy can be created or destroyed.

3- A cyclic mode, or oscillating, model of the universe is any model in which the universe follows infinite cycles of

expansion and contraction but does not explain origin or ending.
